Making Bubbles in the Desert
Living in an arid desert with humidity levels between 10–20% poses unique challenges for bubble play outdoors. The very dry air speeds up evaporation, and dust particles in the air weaken bubble walls. These conditions can make giant bubbles short-lived. Still, with some adjustments, you can create satisfying bubble moments—even the occasional giant bubble.
Key Challenges
-
Rapid evaporation – bubble film dries before it stabilises.
-
Airborne particles – dust and sand puncture bubble walls.
-
Heat and wind – accelerate breakage.
Practical Adjustments
-
Time of day – bubble at dawn or dusk when temperatures and evaporation are lower.
-
Shade – work under trees, structures, or canopies to slow drying.
-
Proximity to water – near lakes, fountains, or sprinklers, the air is slightly more humid. *Exercise caution with children around water”.
-
Mix consistency – sometimes a slightly more diluted solution works better; experiment with small test batches.
- Trial and Error – Test with different ratios of water, soap and polymers. Try different polymers including Guar gum, J-lube, PEO and HEC. Also test with different additives like glycerine. Read more about ingredients.
-
Tools and scale – in windy or very dry conditions, giant bubbles may be nearly impossible. Use net wands and tools that create smaller bubbles so you will always get bubbles, and focus on the enjoyment of smaller ones instead of expecting large ones.Ideas for different tools to experiment with: 1) Net wands 2) Smilers 3) Hand Foamers 4) Larger foamers used with battery powered blowers 5) Smoke filled bubbles 6) Multi-wands 7) Expandable Balls
- Can you be indoors instead? Does your bubble perform better indoors? Can you provide indoor bubble play or a bubble show instead?
The Right Mindset
In desert conditions, not every attempt will produce a giant floating bubble. Accept that some days will only yield smaller bubbles. With patience, timing, and the right tools, you can still enjoy the magic of bubbles—even in the driest climates. Nets and Smilers will make smaller bubbles so much fun!
Recommendation:
Plan bubble play for cooler, shaded times of day and rely on Net and Smiler wands when conditions are harsh.
Next step: Mix test batches with added water and try them at dusk near a shaded or humid spot with net and Smiler wands on hand.
Or explore indoor bubble play.
