Bubble Shows in Street or High Foot Traffic Areas – My Approach
I generally avoid performing in busy street areas if possible. It’s not impossible to do safely, but there are higher risks — especially slip hazards and mess — in areas with a lot of public foot traffic.
If I were to accept a booking in such a location, I would first discuss the risks with the customer and make it clear that they would be responsible for ensuring the area remains safe after I leave. This would include cleaning the space and blocking it off from pedestrians to avoid slips.
When performing, I would:
- Lay down a large protective covering.
- Put out wet floor signs, as I do for outdoor shows.
- Double-tub my bucket to minimise drips.
- Hold the wand over the bucket for longer to catch more drips.
- Keep the wand above my bucket and mats, avoiding waving it around unnecessarily.
- Reduce bubble output by engaging the crowd with countdowns and interactions.
- Adjust show length if weather or mess levels increase risk.
- Use Uncle Bubble Liquid OR Bubble Powder Pro as these liquids are less slimey, gloopy and drippy.
Recently, I declined a job in a busy walkway next to a canal. Later, I saw another performer doing it on social media— and it looked unsafe. I’m glad I wasn’t liable for anything that could have gone wrong.
